Question by gee im a tree: How to cite sources MLA format?
So I forget how to do this every time I write have to write a paper…
How do you cite sources within the paper:
Do you use parentheses or brackets? What do you put in the parentheses/brackets?
I will mainly be using books and websites but information on how to cite other types of sources would be fantastic as well.
It would also be helpful if you could give me an example of how to cite this website:
ftp://ftp.fao.org/fi/stat/summary/a-0a.pdf
It came from this site:
http://www.fao.org/fishery/statistics/en
The link I clicked was “Summary table of fishery statistics”
Oh yeah and then I clicked “Latest summaries and tables”
And after that I clicked “World fisheries production, by capture and aquaculture, by country”

To cite something with in a paper you use parenthesis. what you put in the parentheses depends on what you are citing. You almost always put the authors name. This may be all you have to put, but if you are quoting a book you should also include the page number like this (author, 180). And remember quotes always go on the outside of the citation.
If you are quoting 2 articles, either online, in print or both, that have the same author you also need to include the first couple words of the title of each of the articles to clarify which one you are citing.
If the article you are using does not have an author listed then you should put the article title or the first few words of the citation.
I always use the websites below to help me whenever I need to do a bibliography or works cited.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Question by Bob: Do you think it was right that someone deleted this question?
I asked a question here which simply asked, “What do you think about these statistics?” With a link posted in the box to a legitimate source the USA government website. How is that worthy of being deleted? Seriously? Isn’t this section suppose to be for asking question regarding race, culture, groups and such? So what violation did I make?
Link I included: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/race.htm
Gentle, I didn’t say anything, I simply posted statistics from our US Government. If you have a problem with their inaccuracy i suggest you write to the government.

Question by amy: grad school funding?
I’m pretty sure I’ve made up my mind where I want to go for my PhD. I like the town, the school and the faculty. They are also offering enough money.
However, I feel that, my application was probably stronger than most of their applicants. I know they are also trying to recruit me. They know that if I accept, their “annual statistics” for the new class would look better. Basically, they will have me and my accomplishments to show off on their website.
Is there any way I can ask for more funding? Or perks? If so, how do I go about it?
Thanks.

I seriously doubt it. Not at least for your first year. At the school I’ve decided to go to (yes, I think I’ve made up my mind too), we get a ,000 raise every year if we apply for it–assuming we are doing well. You’re in the same boat as everyone else. It doesn’t matter where you were ranked on their list of acceptances AFTER you accept…you are bascially all equal. So no, I doubt they would give you more money. I could same the same about 3 or 4 schools I got into. Would I ask them for more money? No. Definintely not…even though I’m a well qualified applicant, and two of these schools anyone with a pulse could get into.
My advice is to enjoy your acceptance (because some people did NOT get in that did want to) and to budget your money wisely. They will probably increase your stipend every year to adjust for inflation anyways.

Question by ThankYou: How Can I Get Practice of Statistics (Teachers Edition)?
Hi i am looking to buy the Teacher’s Edition book for “Practice of Statistics” by Daniel Yates, David Moore, and Daren Starnes.
Where can i find it? It seems like their website only sells it to teachers who belong in some high school faculty, not even teachers who tutor kids or whatnot.

Sorry, the publishers tightly control those volumes – if you can’t prove you’re a teacher, you can’t get one. If you’re tutoring the subject, you shouldn’t need it anyway. Neither should teachers, really. They won’t sell them to anyone because then kids in the class could get it and cheat, and the teacher wouldn’t order it next year.

This could be related to your latest software, Active X or Java Applet installs. I would recommend to check all programs that were installed since your PC last successful boot.

Question by almachandcanismajor: Please explain these baseball abbreviations “Minimum of 1000 IP, 3000 PA and 100 decisions..” from the website
“Minimum of 1000 IP, 3000 PA and 100 decisions for career and active leaderboards for rate statistics.” http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/BA_career.shtml
What is IP, PA, and 100 decisions?
i am guessing…
innings played for IP
plate attempts for PA
IP can not stand for Innings Pitched in this circumstance because the website is talking about the leaders for all time batting average….. Still I am confused as to the meaning of “100 decisions”…??

Answer by rhodedog2007
IP stands for Innings Pitched or Innings Played

Question by Queuejares Tiyuvy: Do “site statistics” tell a website owner the URL of the page I was viewing prior to visiting their site?
Here’s my concern: I visit the blog of a person, let’s say its a casual acquaintance. He’ll probably guess that it’s me from my IP address since he know the company where I work and doesn’t know anyone else at this company. However, would he be able to figure out that I had been looking at some kinky webpage just before typing in his URL?
I don’t mind if my friend knows that I look I look at his blog, but I don’t want him to know that I also look at foot-fetish sites (or whatever).

if you clicked a link from the previous site to get to his site, then it may be possible for him to pick up the site that you were at previously if he is using a tracker (this can be picked up through javascript using the document.referrer property).
But, if you didn’t click through a link to get to his site – i.e. you were simply at the previous site, then you typed the address of his site in the address bar – then you have nothing to worry about. In this case the address of the previous site cannot be picked up by any kind of tracker that he might be using.
